The Department of Education (DepEd) has introduced the Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum as part of its continuous effort to improve the quality of education in the Philippines. This updated curriculum aims to better equip learners with essential competencies needed for higher education, employment, and lifelong learning.
Nature of the Strengthened SHS Curriculum
The strengthened SHS curriculum is designed to be:
- Relevant – aligned with current global standards and industry needs
- Responsive – adaptable to the demands of higher education and workforce trends
- Streamlined – reduced redundancy and focused on essential competencies
- Outcome-based – centered on developing critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills
It ensures that learners are not overloaded with content but instead develop mastery of key skills and concepts.
The Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum simplifies the previous 15 core subjects into 5 Integrated Core Learning Areas. These subjects are designed to strengthen foundational competencies in communication, scientific and mathematical thinking, personal development, and civic understanding.

Rationale Behind the Curriculum Update
The revision of the SHS curriculum is grounded on several important goals:
- To address learning gaps observed in previous implementations
- To ensure college and career readiness among graduates
- To align with international education standards
- To strengthen foundational and transferable skills
- To respond to feedback from educators, industry partners, and stakeholders
Ultimately, the strengthened curriculum aims to produce holistically developed, globally competitive Filipino learners.
The revised SHS core subjects reflect DepEd’s goal of decongesting the curriculum while strengthening essential competencies, ensuring learners are more prepared for higher education, employment, and life skills development.
